If knee arthritis is affecting your quality of life and restricting you from activities you enjoy, you can turn to Ortho Sport & Spine Physicians. When non-surgical therapies have failed or your arthritis is affecting large areas of your knee, a total or partial knee replacement can be an excellent solution to restore your knee function. Our sports medicine team includes double board-certified surgeons with distinguished expertise in knee injuries. We stay at the forefront of our field by adopting the latest methods and techniques when it comes to total knee replacement and other orthopedic procedures.

A total knee replacement (TKR) or arthroplasty is a surgery that replaces an arthritic or diseased knee joint with artificial replacement parts. During this procedure, we will remove damaged bone and cartilage from your thighbone, shinbone and kneecap and replace it with an artificial joint made of metal alloys, high-grade plastics and polymers. There are a wide variety of designs available and your prosthetic knee joint will be carefully chosen based on your age, weight, activity level and overall health.

Why Is Joint Replacement Recommended?

Although some patients may need a TKR due to severe injury, most cases involve an arthritic knee that is causing pain and restricting function. As the knee degenerates, the smooth cartilage that lines the knee joint deteriorates. Without cartilage, your knee loses its shock absorber and it can become stiff or move with friction. Once the cartilage is damaged or lost, it cannot repair itself. For older patients who have tried conservative therapies and whose cartilage damage is extensive, a joint replacement may be necessary. If only one compartment of the knee is affected, a partial knee replacement may be recommended. Joint replacement can be a life-changing procedure, but it is one that we believe should be a cooperative decision between the patient, family, primary care doctor and surgeon.

Benefits of Joint Replacement of the Knee

Total knee replacement is one of the most successful operations available today. Older patients benefit most from this type of procedure, especially if their knee arthritis is negatively impacting their quality of life and they are suffering from knee pain and stiffness on a daily basis. Our orthopedic surgeons proudly offer total and partial joint replacement to relieve disruptive arthritic symptoms and help patients regain an active lifestyle. In general 90-95% of knee replacements survive 15 years, depending on age and activity level.

Surgery was a success my left knee is fully functional again. Langer and his staff was very helpful through this entire process they assigned me a top physical therapist Cara which was great at helping me to improve now just up to me to continue to condition myself back to the way I was physically before the injury and hopefully I never have to endure any future injuries that lead to surgery. Overall a great help and experience after surgery was completed. Thank You to Langer and his staff.

Ortho Sport & Spine Physicians are excellent in the work they do. They take their time with each patient and make sure you walk away with an understanding of exactly what you're going through. I have been a patient here twice and I could 100% assure you that you will have a great experience. Further the physicians are very knowledgeable and experienced at what they do. Moreover, the entire staff are welcoming and accommodating to your needs. I work in Entertainment, and have appeared several times on television (Google "David Wells and Ricky Johnson). I recommend and trust Ortho Sport & Spine Physicians.
