When vertebrae segments move and cause pain and other debilitating symptoms, a spinal fusion may be recommended for relief. At Ortho Sport & Spine Physicians, we offer a few options in spinal fusion surgeries, including anterior lumbar interbody fusion, or ALIF. For those with lower back pain and other symptoms from lumbar vertebrae issues that do not respond to less-invasive treatments, ALIF surgery can be the best solution to give relief.
Our team of spine specialists has extensive experience and training when it comes to addressing complex spinal issues. Our surgeons are double board-certified and have received fellowship training, offering the highest level of expertise in the spinal surgical field. When lumbar vertebrae movement is causing extreme pain and dysfunction for our patients, our physicians will look at all the options available to give the best results with the least amount of risk. ALIF surgery can be a viable option for those with certain lumbar conditions, with fewer risks and quicker recovery than other types of spinal fusion surgeries.
Performing ALIF Surgery
With ALIF surgery, the lumbar spine is approached from the anterior, or front, position to complete the spinal fusion. While not effective for all types of spinal fusions, the anterior approach does have advantages over accessing the spine from the posterior, or back, position. Accessing the spine through the abdomen gives direct access to the spine without interfering with muscles or organs, posing less risk. The abdominal muscles and organs can be retracted to the side, allowing access for the lumbar fusion without cutting or damage.
