Snapping Hip Syndrome Treatment

Snapping hip syndrome is a painful condition caused by the rubbing of a tendon around the hip joint over a bony surface. It is a progressed form of tendonitis that causes tendon damage if left untreated. The sports medicine surgeons of Ortho Sport & Spine Physicians are exceptionally qualified to treat hip-related injuries and conditions. Our team is recognized for its expertise in hip arthroscopy, a minimally invasive surgical technique that provides less pain, less tissue damage and faster recovery for hip repairs.

Whether you suffer from snapping hip because of overuse, injury, or improper knee alignment, we understand how disruptive and painful this condition can be. We are a leading Atlanta practice that provides cutting-edge treatments to relieve your snapping hip symptoms, which may include snapping or popping in the hip, tenderness, inflammation and painful hip flexibility.

Your treatment for snapping hip syndrome will be based on our physician’s thorough examination. This condition can sometimes be treated with conservative measures such as rest and anti-inflammatories to relax the tendon back to its normal state. However, ongoing problems with snapping hip may require surgery. At Ortho Sport & Spine Physicians, we offer arthroscopic techniques as a minimally invasive solution to effectively release the aggravated hip tendon and provide long-term pain relief for active adults.

ITB or Iliopsoas Malfunction

Snapping hip syndrome is commonly caused by either external (Iliotibial band, ITB) or internal (Iliopsoas) malfunction. When the ITB is the origin, the tendon snaps over the greater trochanter of the femur. However, an Iliopsoas malfunction involves the tendon snapping over a bony prominence of the pelvis. Dancers, soccer players, gymnasts and runners are at a higher risk for snapping hip syndrome due to overuse.

If you suffer from frequent popping or pain in your hip joint, please contact Ortho Sport & Spine Physicians to take advantage of the latest treatment options that sports medicine has to offer. From professional athletes to weekend warriors, we work hard to help you achieve the best recovery possible after a hip injury.
