Symmetry is found in mathematics, art, architecture or nature. In your body we beautifully exhibit a balance of bilateral symmetry. This means that your body can be divided into matching halves by drawing a straight line down the center of your left and right sides. If you could fold your body in half to face both sides you would see a mirror image. This symmetry works with your brain helping your visual perception.
Symmetry is nature’s preferred state of balance. A balanced body functions well. If you’re born with a leg that is longer than the other, it can cause future injury. Your body desires balance and symmetry. In addition to having balanced size, your balanced muscles enable your body to function the way they’re supposed to. Often times we function unconsciously asymmetrical. These asymmetrical movements can cause us to be imbalanced and cause injury or back pain.
A harmful asymmetrical habit that causes back pain or Sciatica in some men is sitting for long periods with a wallet in your back pocket. This small daily habit can put stress on your hip joint and lower back. For men, this action causes your sciatic nerve to be pinched. It can cause pain that begins from your hip, but can send pain all the way down your leg. This is called Sciatica.
A harmful asymmetrical habit that causes back pain in some women is sitting with legs crossed. When you cross your legs while sitting, your pelvis rolls forward and misaligns your spine. This puts pressure on your lower back and causes you to sit leaning to one side causing an imbalanced pelvis.
