Kyphoplasty is a minimally invasive procedure designed to alleviate back pain caused by spinal fractures and other spinal conditions. A spinal fracture or spinal condition can be difficult to cope with because it can cause intense pain, but kyphoplasty is designed to help patients find relief. At Ortho Sport & Spine Physicians, we are an orthopedic and interventional spine practice that specializes in finding solutions to chronic and acute pain conditions using interventional spine treatments such as kyphoplasty. Our practice is made up of double board certified Interventional Spine Physicians and an orthopedic specialist who are committed to helping patients find long term relief and improved function.
A kyphoplasty treatment procedure is an outpatient procedure that is typically quick, pain free, and offers immediate results for many patients. During the procedure, patients will lie face down so that the doctor will have access to the spine. A small incision will be made in the patient’s back and a tube will be inserted to create a path to the damaged vertebra. A special tube will be inserted in the pathway and a small balloon will carefully be inflated. When the balloon inflates, the vertebral fracture will be lifted and the vertebra will be returned to a more natural position. The balloon will be removed and the cavity will then be filled with polymethyl methacrylate, which is a cement-like liquid that will harden and stabilize the vertebrae quickly.
At Ortho Sport & Spine Physicians, we understand that chronic or acute back pain can affect every area of a person’s life. Kyphoplasty can give relief to many who suffer from back pain due to spinal fractures and other spinal conditions.
