Orthobiologics are often an early treatment option for sports injuries and can complement surgery. Ortho refers to the bones, and biologic refers to natural substances used to aid healing. There are four types of orthobiologics used by the surgeons at Ortho Sport & Spine Physicians.
A2M (Alpha 2 Macroglobulin) Intra-Articular Treatment
A2M Intra-Articular treatment is a superior treatment for osteoarthritis, common among athletes and others. Cartilage degeneration in osteoarthritis is both painful and debilitating. Using Alpha 2 macroglobulin injections can slow this cartilage breakdown by binding the enzymes that cause the degeneration. A2M therapy uses the patient’s own blood and concentrates the A2M, providing an extremely effective way to stop this degeneration and allow the patient to resume regular activities without pain.
Amniotic Allograft Intra-Articular Treatment
Amniotic allograft treatment also treats osteoarthritis and tears in tendons and muscles. These injections into the joint provide deep healing to cartilage and the underlying bone. The biologics are taken from donated amniotic fluid from mothers of newborns and are both safe and ethical. The healing provided by amniotic allograft treatments is often profound, avoiding surgery entirely and bringing a higher degree of health and movement to the joint.
Chondral (Cartilage) Repair
The chondral tissue, commonly known as cartilage, is the soft tissue that covers the body with protection so that you can move freely and without pain. However, when the cartilage is damaged from injury or osteoarthritis, the bone is exposed and can respond with swelling, pain and stiffness. Although there are several options to deal with damaged cartilage, orthobiologics are non-invasive and highly effective.
Viscosupplementation Intra-Articular Treatment
This is another orthobiologic treatment for osteoarthritis sufferers. While viscosupplementation intra-articular treatment doesn’t work for everyone, it can be life-changing for others. Our bodies produce hyaluronic acid to reduce friction between the joints, like a shock absorber and a lubricant. However, those who suffer from osteoarthritis often produce lower amounts of hyaluronic acid than needed. With viscosupplementation therapy, supplemental hyaluronic acid is injected into the joint, increasing lubrication and reducing pain, stiffness and swelling.
At Ortho Sport & Spine Physicians, we offer these orthobiologics to help our patients regain movement without pain. We also begin with the least invasive therapies to bring health and healing to your body in the best possible way. Contact us today to find out if orthobiologics can help heal your body.
