If you experience pain in your back, buttocks and legs, it may be due to your sciatic nerve. Sciatica is also referred to as Lumbar Radiculopathy and is diagnosed using imaging tests to determine what is causing your pain. Most times, the pain is due to compression of your sciatic nerve from a degeneration of an intervertebral disc.
There is another condition that is often confused with Sciatica called Piriformis Syndrome. This condition also is due to compression of your sciatic nerve, but the compression is muscular and generated in your buttocks.
If you have pain related to your sciatic nerve, it’s important to first determine the cause and location of the compression, and then seek relief using effective treatment. Atlanta Sciatica Treatment Doctors at Ortho Sport & Spine Physicians offer this type of effective treatment.
Stretches you can do at home to relieve some sciatic nerve pain
Active hamstring stretch – lay on your back. Hug one knee up to your chest. Keep your knee to your chest and straighten your knee as far as possible to feel a stretch in the back of your upper leg.
Knee across chest stretch – lay on your back and hug one knee up and bring it across your body toward the opposite elbow. You will experience a stretch in your buttocks.
Runner’s stretch – get in a hands and knees position (tabletop). Stretch one leg straight back and sit down. Lean your chest down onto your front knee to feel a stretch in your buttock.
