According to a recent study conducted by the American Osteopathic Association, misdiagnosis of foot and ankle injuries can lead to poor patient outcomes, including long-term disability and the further development of disabling conditions. The study goes on to recommend that physicians seek out additional imaging and second opinions rather than risk a potential misdiagnosis of injury.
These include sports injuries such as turf toe, snowboarder’s fracture, Lisfranc fracture, and more.
The study indirectly concludes that sometimes a second opinion can mean the difference between getting back to sports and activities you love and being sidelined for the long term:
- Misdiagnosed and undertreated snowboard fractures are connected to future development of arthritis.
- Foot injuries and turf toe, when misdiagnosed or untreated, have been linked to future chronic pain and disability.
- Undertreated foot and ankle injuries can also, and often do, lead to future and more debilitating injury down the road.
The double board certified team at Ortho Sport & Spine Physicians is available for second opinions for a wide range of sport and spine injuries, and are here to answer any additional questions you may have about your diagnosis.
