If you have muscle pain that does not resolve on its own after a few weeks, it could be myofascial pain syndrome, a chronic pain condition that affects the musculoskeletal system. You may notice sensitive spots on your body, which are known as trigger points, or “knots”.
What is a Trigger Point?
A trigger point develops in the tense, fibrous bands of muscles known as fascia. They are called trigger points because if you apply pressure to one, you will feel pain in a different part of the body (known as referred pain). This happens because trigger points can irritate the nerves around them, causing pain elsewhere. For example, headaches can be related to trigger points in the neck muscles, while lower back pain can be related to trigger points in the abdominal muscles.
Other common symptoms of myofascial pain syndrome include:
- Pain that worsens when the problem muscle is strained or stretched
- Localized deep pain in a muscle
- Muscle pain that fails to improve with time or worsens
- Muscles that are stiff, inflexible, weak or have reduced range of motion
- Sleep or mood disturbances
If you experience any of these discomforts, Ortho Sport & Spine Physicians can help you find relief with trigger point injections. Our team of double board-certified interventional spine physicians and orthopedic specialists are experts in such advanced interventional treatments.
What Are the Goals of Trigger Point Release Treatment?
The Trigger Point Injections Specialists at Ortho Sport & Spine Physicians use the trigger point release treatment to treat painful areas of tense muscle. Your physician will inject a steroid and anesthetic into the trigger point(s) to relax the muscle knot during the therapy. The injection(s) improve blood circulation to the trigger zone and release the surrounding fasciae, alleviating the pain.
We use trigger point release therapy to treat various other chronic pain disorders in addition to myofascial pain syndrome, including fibromyalgia and tension headaches. Our pain specialists are highly experienced in administering trigger point injections for all types of chronic pain. At Ortho Sport & Spine Physicians, we can help you improve your quality of life with this minimally invasive technique.
