Are you experiencing chronic wrist pain? It may be due to a triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) tear, which is expected since the structure is complex.
A TFCC is made up of ligaments, tendons and cartilage. It supports the wrist’s carpal bones and stabilizes the radius and ulna (forearm bones) as you grasp objects or rotate your hand.
The Hazard of Leaving a TFCC Tear Untreated
The TFCC is under constant use, so your quality of life is significantly compromised if you injure it. You may feel pain every time you move the wrist, and simple tasks become a challenge if you cannot move it.
The longer you leave a TFCC tear untreated, the higher the risk it will result in persistent instability. Hence, it would be wise not to disregard wrist pain, as it can lead to further damage and a longer recovery time.
TFCC Tear Risk Factors
Anyone can develop a TFCC tear. However, athletes who practice repetitive wrist movements – like those who use a bat, racquet or club and gymnasts – are at higher risk.
In addition, people over 50 years old, people with chronic inflammation due to conditions (such as gout or rheumatoid arthritis) and people who have previously sustained a wrist injury are more likely to damage their wrists over time.
TFCC Tear Symptoms
The main TFCC tear symptoms are tenderness and pain when touching or moving your wrist. The pain can be constant or only when you apply pressure or move it. The other symptoms are:
- Swelling
- Diminished range of motion
- Instability and restricted capacity to grasp objects due to a weakened grip
- Stiffness
- Popping or clicking sounds during wrist movement
Do not ignore these signals, even if they are mild. The sooner you fix the wrist, the better your chances are of the injury healing properly and the more likely you are to avoid further damage. Ortho Sport & Spine Physicians specializes in wrist injuries and can help you find relief and recover.
TFCC Tear Treatment
Your wrist pain might be treatable via conservative methods. However, if the damage is too significant, you will need to undergo a minimally-invasive surgery called wrist arthroplasty.
The experienced physicians at Ortho Sport & Spine Physicians will provide a comprehensive diagnosis to determine the extent of damage and your treatment needs. Do not hesitate to book an appointment so we can facilitate your return to regular activity in as short a time as possible.
